Afterword: A Book Project

Words evoke powerful ideas, images and emotions. Afterword: A Book Project demonstrates the uniquely personal reactions to an author’s work that enters a world beyond words where art making takes over. Women artists respond to women authors in a place often relegated to “the middle of nowhere” - the vastness of the prairie. Through words, through art making, Afterword: A Book Project reveals that this place of flat land and huge sky is replete with vibrant life. Where people live, who they are and the experiences they have, all inform how individuals interpret the world around them or comprehend words in a book. The connections found between prairie authors and prairie artists in this project have resulted in a dynamic display of interdisciplinary art that deals with an array of concepts and decodes the complex reality of what it means to be a woman, perhaps especially, a prairie woman.

CANADIAN GOTHIC

It is all about making things. Getting into the zone and letting all the years of practise and observation take over. I have been very fortunate to work with glass for over forty years. And now in my ‘retirement’ I am free to do whatever inspires. Glass, paper ink and fabric are in the mix at present. My childhood was happy and free growing up in small town Birtle Manitoba. Our parents taught us to work hard, respect others and keep our eyes open. I use my memory bank for inspiration.

CODEPENDENCY

“Earth’s true wilderness is vanishing. Luckily, Canada is one of the few countries that still offers vast areas that are untouched by humans. Where human and wildlife habitat merge it is possible to encounter all kinds of wild animals – something that we may take for granted. Being a newcomer to this beautiful country and seeing animals in the wild never ceases to amaze me. With my paintings I attempt to capture wildlife in a way that will allow the viewer to connect with the animal by conveying relatable traits and emotions. My hope is that this connection will translate into a greater awareness and effort in protecting the wild and its creatures for future generations to enjoy.”

Linda Woywada, Leslie Barnett, Tracy Michalchuk and Haylee Janai

Family members Linda Woywada, (grandmother), Leslie Barnett and Tracy Michalchuk (daughters), and Haylee Janai (granddaughter) have all had an interest in art of all formats from an early age. Having all been born and raised in places that inspire them, the family has sought to capture the beauty of the lakes, animals, skies and landscapes. These pieces of work represent the local places they have lived close to, distant places they have visited, and the subjects of their minds both past and present.
